The recent win by the Miami Heat made me realize that winning an NBA Championship is a lot like online dating. There is a lot of preparation, adversity and doubt; but in the end, it’s all worth it.

So how can you use this analogy to help your online dating success? This post will provide you with the mindset and tactics needed to be a successful online dater.

While I’ve yet to win an NBA championship (LeBron won’t return my Tweets!), I have experienced success with online dating.

Let’s take a look!

It Can Be a Long Season

In an NBA regular season, eighty two games are played even before you have a chance to fight for the championship. That’s eighty two times of getting dressed up, lacing on your sneakers and playing forty eight minutes. That doesn’t even include practices and team meetings.

Dating is similar (hopefully you have less than eighty two dates!). You have to prepare, confirm date details, pick a place and show up with your ‘A’ game.

In many ways, it really is a numbers game. And, you would be foolish to think that you’re going to win every time out.

With that said, there are things you can do to give yourself a better shot at success.

Here are three keys to focus on:

  1. Have a great online profile
  2. Know how to send messages to a potential match
  3. Plan out the first date

Following the above steps will increase your chances of finding success.

Last Shot for Your Best Player

In basketball, you draw up the last play for your best player.

You see it all the time. The coach calls a timeout, brings out his mini whiteboard, draws some x’s and o’s and boom, the play is set-up for the team’s best player to win it or lose it.

Well, in online dating, guess who the best player is? You!

As the best player, you need to do things to make sure the other team (i.e. your match) knows that.

In many ways, that means doing things outside of online dating that will make you well rounded, interesting and in a position where you deserve to take that last shot.

Focus on building a great cake of a life where you are pursuing your passions, exercising regularly and having an active social life.

The goal is to choose challenge over comfort.

Make Your Team Better

When Michael Jordan was winning NBA championships (6 in total!), he played with guys like Bill Cartwright, Steve Kerr and BJ Armstrong. Hall of Famers? I think not.

Not to take anything away from LeBron James, as he has accomplished a lot. However, he won two NBA championships with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. Say what you want, but Wade and Bosh are both all-star caliber players that would be the first choice option on many other NBA teams. Remember, LeBron didn’t win any championships playing with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

What I’m trying to say is: Be like Mike.

Be the person in the room or online that adds value and makes everyone around you better. Look for ways to do this on a constant basis. Whether it’s when you’re out grabbing a morning coffee or talking to your mother.

Add value. Everywhere.

As the old saying goes, the more you give, the more you get.

What Is the Key Takeaway?

The key takeaway is that if you’re serious about online dating success, you need to treat the process with respect and do all you can in your power to put your best self forward.

Do you see the elation and joy on the faces of the players after winning a championship? That is a result of hard work, preparation and execution toward a common goal.

Keep your end goals in mind as you work through the process. You deserve to feel that same joy and elation too.
