As I have said countless times here before on Free Online Dating Advice, what you put into your profile is of utmost importance.
Without wanting to put too fine a point on it, how awesome and interesting you are in “real life” is of little relevance if your profile isn’t up to scratch. Your profile has to reflect the best parts of your character, otherwise people won’t give you a second look. It’s all about putting your best foot forward.
There are various elements to a profile that you can look to “optimize”, and your tagline is one of them. In this article, I want to discuss what makes a good tagline, and offer up a few examples that you can seek inspiration from.
What is a Tagline?
A dating site profile is generally made up of various elements — your username, photos, biography, and so on. Some dating sites include a tagline within your profile, which typically allow space for a relatively brief sentence.
Taglines are typically prominent when people are searching through profiles, so represent a great chance to catch the eye of any number of prospective matches.
What Makes a Great Tagline?
I actually get paid to blog for a living (not for this site — this is more a labor of love). One of the first things you should learn as a professional blogger is the power of a good headline. This concept holds true throughout any form of marketing — from newspapers, to magazines, and so on.
There are general “rules” to follow when it comes to writing great headlines, and these can also be attributed to taglines. You should generally look for taglines to include a number of attributes. Your tagline should be any number of the following:
There are also a few things that your tagline should not be:
- Overly provocative
- Creepy (this one can quite easily be inadvertent)
In my opinion, the worst kind of taglines are those that demonstrate the person’s lack of confidence in themselves. Because let’s face it — there are few things that are more of a turnoff.
Remember — your profile is where you put your best foot forward. A tagline like, “In desperate search of a nice guy” (yep — I’ve seen that) is not going to endear you towards anyone. Keep it light and breezy.
Furthermore, when it comes to online dating, you want to attract the right people — not just any old guy or girl. So the most important thing to bear in mind when creating a tagline is that it should reflect your true character. Don’t hide yourself behind a wall of delicately-chosen words — put yourself out there. The right people will be far more likely to find you (and want to engage with you).
Great Tagline Examples
I personally think that you should come up with a unique tagline that matches your own unique character, based upon the advice given above. However, if you need some examples to inspire you (or simply don’t want to think of your own tagline), I’ve included a few of my favorites below.
Although I have tried to include a wide range, these taglines reflect what I like. They may not be to your taste, and that is really the whole point — taglines should be individual to you.
